A black and white photograph shows several people in silhouette viewing an ornate memorial plaque (the tombstone of Jacob Bernoulli) with a decorative baroque frame mounted on a white wall. Dramatic diagonal shadows from unseen windows fall across the wall. Below the plaque's Latin inscription, a spiral design is visible.

Yesterday, many members of the WordCamp Europe 2025 organizing team gathered in Basel to check out the venue and get to know each other. Apart from visiting the congress centre and discussing various topics, we got a very nice guided tour to explore the city.

Here we were standing in front of the tombstone of Jacob Bernoulli and our guide Lukas explained that Bernoulli was so fascinated by the logarithmic spiral that he wanted it carved on his tombstone. Unfortunately, the mason who made the stone misunderstood the assignment and gave him an Archimedean spiral instead. A mistake that would have probably made Bernoulli turn in his grave if he had seen it.
