Hello world
After our trip through Italy in April, there was a lot going on in May and I just never really got back into the habit of writing.
But here we are again. Client projects have been finished, WordCamp happened and was a success and for picu we just released our long awaited e-commerce release last week!
So, I finally feel like having some capacity for writing again. Let’s go.
The Small Web ❤️
Such a lovely post describing very nicely why we should all have websites and own our content.

🎓 Piccalilli turns business model on its head
The fine people of Set Studio and Piccalilli announced that they try out a new approach. Instead of big name clients and making the rich richer, they want to help good causes and turn to the community to support this, while offering frontend education at the same time. I really like their idea and would love to see them succeed.
✂️ Easier layout with margin-trim
The new CSS property margin-trim makes it possible to tell an element to trim all margins off its children. The cool thing is it not only does this for direct children, but also for any margin that pushes up against the container from grandchildren. Only supported in Safari so far, but pretty cool.

👍 Design Ethos
I can get behind the points in the Design Ethos published here by UK code-red.
👏 Strong Design Principles start with: “Versus What?”
Jehad shares some thoughts about the questions you should ask yourself when you write down your product or company’s design principles. He mentions that real principles should be a little painful, otherwise you are probably just writing down your compromises. Reminded me of Florian mentioning how the last 10 photographs he scraps should always hurt to delete.

⚡️ Pragmatic approach to browser support
I couldn’t agree more with this and I think progressive enhancement should be among the most important concepts you learn when you work on the web. Period.

📄 Buttons proposal
This sounds like an interesting proposal.

🖼️ Our interfaces have lost their senses
Amelia Wattenberger on how our interfaces became flatter over time and her ideas on what could be done to make them richer again.

😎 Using CSS Grid for some “Faux Containers”
Nice technique Tyler Sticka shows in here. Creating a faux container for some card layouts using CSS Grid.

📋 About personal README files
I like this idea of a personal README file that – like a good README file for any project – accumulates all the things someone should know when working with you.

Shokunin and the Art of getting better
I really like this post about the Japanese way of shokunin, which means to always strive to get better and do your best, out of respect to yourself and the world around you.

Have a good weekend – and be nice to each other ✌️
