Reading List #94

Hello friends

The news coming from all sides, make it very easy to feel helpless these days. For me, one coping mechanism to try and stay somewhat sane has been to find things where I can be helpful, even if “only” to one person or in a very small way. Another has been to find more creative outlets, which means I sketched, scribbled and painted more in the last few weeks than possibly all year last year.

Anyway, here you find a few of the things I’ve read in the past week or two.

๐Ÿ‘ Creating streamlined editorial experiences in WordPress

Mark Howells-Mead wrote a whole series of posts about his approach when building sites for clients using the block editor. It’s always interesting to see how others solve the same issues and challenges we face in our work as well.

๐Ÿ™Œ Invoker Commands in WP

Pascal Birchler is looking at Invoker Commands โ€“ a browser-native way to assign behaviors to buttons to control interactive elements on a page โ€“ and what can be done with them with WordPress blocks or in connection with the WP Interactivity API.

If you’re looking for inspiration on things you can do with the block editor in WordPress, this site got you covered.

๐Ÿ’ช Hard Page Loads VS Single Page Applications

In my last list, I linked to an article by Harry Roberts, who highlighted the importance of using native web features instead of blindly using whatever-framework-is-en-vogue just for the sake of it. And last week I’ve read this great post by Alexander Petros, who makes some great points on why hard page reloads can (and usually are) better for your users and you(!) in comparison to SPAs.

Sometimes, I stumble upon a font and immediately get this urge to buy it and create something โ€“ anything โ€“ with it. Weekend Grotestk is one of those.

๐Ÿค” GiveWP Support Resources

GiveWP publicly shared some support resources that their support team used in the past, consisting of a support manual and support snippets with often used code snippets. Would love to see more of this and already think about what we could put together for picu.

๐Ÿคฏ AI & AlphaFold

I’ve heard of AlphaFold before, but never really realized just how big of a breakthrough it was. This Veritasium video explains a lot of the details behind it, but in terms that someone without a biology masters can understand as well.
