Reading List #87

Hi

I spent this week dabbling with some custom block development for picu, where we want to replace our old shortcode to display a list of galleries with a custom block. I’m still far from feeling at home in react, but I finally made some progress and got the basics working this week. Also, the documentation has become so much better since the last time I looked into this. Looking forward to getting our first custom block released very soon!

🗻 Grid Stacks (aka: The Pyramid Grid)

I don’t think I ever had the need for this particular layout, but I dig this creative solution Ryan Mulligan came up with.

🪄 Microfeatures on Blogs and Personal Websites

Daniel collected some microfeatures he loved from various blogs and personal websites. Love these.

☞ Cursor Party

While we’re at the topic of Microfeatures, here’s a fun one: Cursor Party. Matt Webb built this little thing that lets you turn your website into a place where all concurrent visitors are represented by their cursors and can interact with each other.

🚧 Conditionally Redirect in WordPress

Silvan wrote a short post about how to redirect to another page, if the requested page is not available. In his case it was about redirecting temporarily offline “Job Ads” to their parent “Careers” page, when they are not available, but this could make sense in many other cases as well.

🪝 Hook Order

If you need to know the order in which hooks are loaded in WordPress, this site is a great tool. Also lets you choose older core versions for comparison.

🥟 The evolution of pasta

A group of scientists set out to classify pasta by using the same methods usually used to track the evolution of animals and plants over time. I love nerd stuff like this.
