Reading List #85

Hello ✌️

The last weeks have been pretty exhausting. Too many (simultaneous) things that I said yes to, things happening in our kids life as well as lots of other ideas and things going on work-wise – nothing too crazy actually, but just too much at the same time. By the end of last week I felt like my energy and mental health were approaching rock bottom very soon.

I very much enjoyed having this weekend off for the first time in what felt like an eternity. We were eating out, cycling for a bit, spending lots of time with the kids, and enjoying the late summer days at the Theaterspektakel, which all helped a lot to recharge.

This Monday, I finally feel properly rested and motivated again and look forward to get some things out the door that we were working on for quite a while now.

🔥 Intro to Scroll-Driven Animations with CSS

Adam Argyle demonstrates how to build scroll-driven animations with CSS in this intro post. He starts out with the basics but ends with a pretty slick slider and it is a great read if you want to get an overview of what’s possible with CSS very soon (supported by Chrome browsers so far).

🎚️ Anchor Positioned Custom Range Slider

Another wonderful example of what’s possible with CSS today. Temani Afif creates a custom range slider with a tooltip that not only updates it’s value when dragged, but also animates playfully with the slider, when moved. All using modern CSS and not a single line of JavaScript.

🖤 The Monospace Web

A fun experiment by Oskar Wickström to style markup in a grid using monospace fonts, and “rendered as if we were back in the 70s”. I like this minimalist aesthetic and some of it reminds me of Florian’s photo blog.

🤩 Piccalilli redesigned

If you don’t know Piccalilli, now’s a good time to check it out, as they just completely relaunched the site with a new design. If you are into CSS at all, you should be reading this blog.

👏 Nobody wants to use any software

I loved this piece by Jane Ruffino about your users needs. In her words “no one wants to use software, ever” and it is always a distraction of what they actually want to do and it helps to think about it this way. The goal is to get people out of your software again as fast as possible. Too many good things to quote, so you should just go read the whole thing.

This collection is “A digital archive of graphic design related items that are available on the Internet Archives” by Valery Marier. Some good stuff in here.

🗂️ Public Work

Another great source of inspiration. Public Work is a search engine for public domain content with over 100’000 copyright free images from The MET, New York Public Library and other sources.

🔧 WP-CLI v2.11.0

A new version of WP-CLI is out. If you don’t use it already, I very strongly recommend having a look into it. The new version brings various improvements and some new commands, including the ability to install plugins and themes directly from GitHub as well as many improvements when handling multisite installations.

🇪🇺 How the EU screwed up with Cookie Banners

David Heinemeier Hansson wrote about what he thinks is wrong with the EU legislation on cookie banners. Fully agree with him on this one. It’s too important to legislate these things to leave them to the bureaucratic mess we have today.

🛟 Make more lifeboats

After having some discussions lately about the best ways to motivate people to leave twitter and join Mastodon, this tweet came at the perfect moment. “Make more lifeboats and make it easier to climb into” (instead of rowing away and call people foolish who stay) is a great general motto if you ask me!
