Reading List #18

Hi there ๐Ÿ‘‹

This week I wasn’t that productive. We are waiting for feedback on most of the client projects we are working on right now, and I had some admin chores to do.

Also, yesterday evening we were able to visit a new apartment we applied for with our family, which would be truly awesome if we got it. But it’s also always an emotional rollercoaster and drains my energy much more than I would like to admit. Right now, we are still in the game with about 20 (or so) other families, and a decision is expected next week. If they should pick us, it means packing all our stuff and move out in just one month. ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

๐Ÿ“ CSS Layout algorithms

Josh Comeau shares some of the things he struggled with when thinking about how CSS actually works. His big “Eureka” moment was when he realized that focusing on single properties won’t get you a full understanding of the CSS algorithms and how the properties play together. It makes perfect sense and definitely gave me some things to think about.

๐ŸŽจ Website Themes and Color Schemes

This is a really nice exploration of how to create a toggle for Website Themes (dark/light mode) and color schemes (various color palettes) combined. I should finally finish the work on the dark mode for this very site here.

๐Ÿชง Adding a Coming Soon Page in WordPress

I wrote a post about adding a custom Coming Soon Page for your WordPress projects. It’s something that always bugged me when we needed something like this for our clients, and this week I had a little bit of time to play around and see what I could come up with. I’m quite happy with the result so far and use it on a client project already.

๐Ÿ‘ Design Explorations for the Status & visibility sidebar

Javier Arce shared some design explorations around the status & visibility sidebars in the WordPress Block Editor. I really like the direction this takes and look forward to this being added to the WordPress core.
