A toadstool – Amanita Muscaria or Fliegenpilz – that we saw on one of our hikes last weekend.

One of the many toadstools – Amanita Muscaria or Fliegenpilz in german – that we saw on one of our hikes last weekend. Iconically pictured here with a fly on top of its head; The poisonous mushroom was formerly used to attract and trap insects like flys by mixing parts of it with milk and sugar – which is where it got its name (Musca is latin for fly). While the effects of the poison in humans is known to be unpredictable and can range from nausea or drowsiness up to complete delirium or even seizures, it is consumed in many cultures to this day as an intoxicant due to its euphoric and hallucinogenic effects.
